Our legacy for the future.

Sustainable design is not a passing trend; it is built into our vision, core values, and corporate priorities to design and build the future for our clients, colleagues, and communities.

Our lifecycle approach to sustainable design has always been skillful, sensitive, and practical—we believe in creating spaces that stand the test of time, not just in durability but also in ecological responsibility. Our approach is holistic, encompassing everything from energy efficiency processes to LEED-certified projects and biophilic design. We strive for excellence in reducing adverse impact, ensuring that each project benefits not only our clients but also the wider community and future generations. It’s not just about building for today, but about shaping a sustainable tomorrow.

“Our facility utilizes a very large quantity of water. We’ve worked closely with SSOE on how to best recycle that water in high volumes. In one area, we actually are greater than 90% recycle on the water.”

    Energy Procurement and Consumption

We champion environmental stewardship across our offices and external partnerships that implement environmental management initiatives focused on energy efficiency, waste management, and water conservation. Internally, our offices are powered with 100% renewable electricity. Externally, through LEED-certified commitments, we have save 10 million gallons of water and nearly 700,000 MMbtu of energy each year.

    Green Thumb For Green Design

SSOE specializes in services that promote preservation, reuse, and biophilic design, and is an industry leader in key eco-conscious markets from EV / battery to solar and hydrogen industries. To date, SSOE has successfully completed over 9 million square feet of projects and $1 billion of facilities certified by the USGBC Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. Our accomplishments include the world’s first LEED Platinum automotive assembly plant and the first LEED Gold certified central utility plant in the United States.

    Strategic Partnerships and Pledges

As a longstanding member of the U.S. Green Building Council, SSOE has been at the forefront of sustainable design for over four decades. We are committed signatories to the AIA 2030 Commitment, striving to design carbon-neutral projects by 2030. This commitment entails achieving a 90% predicted Energy Use Intensity (EUI) reduction by 2025 and full carbon neutrality in operations by 2030. Additionally, as signatories to the SBTi, we are dedicated to setting and achieving ambitious GHG emissions reduction targets that align with limiting global temperature rise to below 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2050.
