Labor Day 2020 is Monday, September 7th. Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is observed on the first Monday in September. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day weekend also symbolizes the end of summer and the start of the back-to-school season for many Americans and is celebrated with parties, parades, picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays, and other public gatherings.
No matter where you are celebrating, help make this holiday safer for everyone by following these safety tips.
Legal Fireworks Safety:
- Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
- Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don’t go off or in case of fire.
Swim Safety:
- Never swim alone.
- Make sure you know how to swim in different waters; swimming in a pool is much different than swimming in a lake or river, where more strength is needed to handle currents.
- Swim in areas supervised by a lifeguard.
- Don’t push or jump on others.
- Don’t dive in shallow or unfamiliar areas.
Recreational Boating Safety:
- Make sure your equipment is in good working order, and check expiration dates.
- Prepare a pre-departure checklist to make sure you have everything. A tool kit and first-aid kit should be included.
- Be sure to put on sunscreen.
- If you notice storm clouds, a sudden temperature drop, or wind speed increasing, play it “safe” – get off the water.
- Dress properly and bring an extra set of clothes in case you get wet.
