TOLEDO, Ohio, July 2, 2021 – SSOE Group, a global project delivery firm for architecture, engineering, and construction management, is proud to announce their role on Transportation Research Center’s (TRC) new Smart Mobility Advanced Research & Test Center (SMARTCenter) project, which recently received an Honor Award at the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Ohio 2021 Engineering Excellence Awards Celebration.
SSOE teamed with The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. and provided civil engineering services for the SMARTCenter, an automated and connected vehicle-testing facility. The largest facility of its kind in North America, the $45 million SMARTCenter spans 540 acres and includes an urban network area comprised of diverse roadways, and intersections, including the longest and widest connected, signalized intersection in the industry. The SMARTCenter allows researchers to replicate real-world driving scenarios to test new collision avoidance, automation, connectivity, and infrastructure technologies.
Civil engineering services SSOE provided were performed within a secured, restricted site designed specifically for autonomous vehicle / connected vehicle (AV/CV) testing with large run-offs and included drainage system design, environmental coordination and permitting, contract management, as well as site and roadway design. In addition to supporting the SMARTCenter project, SSOE also provided architecture, interior design, and engineering services for TRC’s 15,000 SF Welcome and Training Center that resides on the same East Liberty, Ohio campus.
The ACEC Ohio Engineering Excellence Awards Competition is a national program that, for over 50 years, has recognized engineering companies for the role they play in developing projects “that demonstrate a high degree of achievement, value, and ingenuity.” Every year, engineering companies from across the country enter their most innovative design projects and studies in state competitions, such as ACEC Ohio’s, with the top entries from each state advancing to the national competition in Washington.
