About the Honoree
After completing his degree in nuclear engineering at The United States Military Academy at West Point, Bailey began his 7 ½ year service to the Army as a commissioned officer in Army Aviation. During that time, he served as a platoon leader, executive officer, plans officer, and company commander for historied units, both the 82nd and the 101st Airborne. Bailey flew the Apache helicopter over the skies of Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2014. He also participated in hurricane recovery planning for Maria and Irma, where the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade sent Army helicopters to Puerto Rico to deliver water and supplies to the island. Prior to leaving the Army in 2018 after fulfillment of duty obligations, Bailey participated in the Hiring Our Heroes program and worked with UPS to plan and supervise a major automation upgrade to the distribution facility near Nashville, Tennessee. He also trained in project management and received his Project Management Professional Certificate from the Project Management Institute (PMI).
After military service, Bailey enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley to get his Master of Engineering in Nuclear Engineering. While there, he studied production mechanisms for therapeutic radionuclides that have shown promising results in early studies for cancer therapies. Upon graduation, Bailey accepted the position as a project manager for SSOE. He now leads multidisciplinary design projects in the semiconductor industry. His recent projects have included new construction of fabrication facilities with project budgets totaling in the several-hundred-million-dollar range. Bailey combines his engineering background with management skills learned from military service to provide insightful input to the design while leading the team to maintain project scope, schedule, and budget.
Commenting on Bailey’s recognition, SSOE’s President Catherine Myers, PE, stated, “James is a very valuable team member and has been an effective Senior Project Manager for our largest client in a very demanding field. He continues to excel on many projects in the Portland area as this large semiconductor manufacturer expands its local facilities. James’ military background enhances his project management capabilities—he understands how to work with and motivate a team facing challenging requests. James serves as a role model for all who work with him; he is so deserving of this prestigious 40 Under 40 Award.”
