TOLEDO, Ohio, February 6, 2024 – SSOE Group (www.ssoe.com), an internationally ranked architecture and engineering firm, announced today the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has officially verified the firm’s science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets. This verification confirms SSOE’s targets meet SBTi’s Criteria and Recommendations as well as the Corporate Net-Zero Standard. Science-based targets provide a clearly defined pathway for companies to reduce GHG emissions.
From Pledge to Progress
SSOE started its journey with SBTi in 2022 when publicly committing to set near-term company-wide emission reductions targets in line with climate science. By committing to science-based targets, organizations pledge to cut their GHG emissions in half by 2030 and achieve net zero before 2050. To meet the 50% reduction goal by 2030, the firm needs to achieve a 5.9% reduction each year, or “602tCO2e”—a term that stands for 602 tonnes of CO2 equivalent—a metric used to express the total climate impact of various greenhouse gases.
In 2023, the firm partnered with Greenly, a carbon accounting platform, to better understand its emissions footprint. During that same year, it produced its inaugural Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report to showcase SSOE’s dedication to environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and ethical business conduct. The intention behind this framework and strategy is to measure and assess the ESG impacts of the firm’s projects and practices and support the goals of these science-based targets.
SSOE’s Jennifer Breault, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C, Senior Architect and Chair of the firm’s Sustainable Design Strategy Group, stated, “Having our science-based targets verified by the SBTi is a significant milestone in our sustainability journey, reinforcing our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement. We’re proud of what we’ve done thus far, but know we have more work to do to achieve these targets which are crucial not only for mitigating climate emergencies but also for ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.”
